Strange Mixture

A strange day of sorting out accommodation for France - - or trying to!

And I ate:

a bowl of Special K with red berries

two slices of wholemeal bread and honey

an apple

several plums

a 2-finger Kit-Kat (yes, blood sugar too low again)

a small amount of plain yogurt

some chicken and sweetcorn soup from the Chinese takeaway

vegetarian spring rolls

a few prawn crackers

an orange

Verdict: Could be better - - but could be worse I suppose. And it is our 31st wedding anniversary - - but too busy holiday planning to celebrate properly! So just a Chinese takeaway - - !

Lots of Veg

Today I went to the Queens for lunch with Mum and Aunty Jean and Uncle Richard, as I used to call them.

And I ate:

a bowl of Special K with red berries

roast dinner: turkey, Yorkshire pud, three chunks of roast potatoes - - and cabbage, peas, carrots, cauliflowers, onions, broccoli - - six a day on one plate!

some home-grown plums

an apple

an orange

two slices of wholemeal bread and honey

some plain yogurt

Verdict - - well at least nine portions of fruit and veg today which has to be something of a record for me!

On the plus side - - I have lost a bit of weight. On the minus side - - my jeans won't stay up. But I'm pleased!

Sunday 14 August 2011

Sunday with Walnut Whip

The day started well - swimming 70 lengths at my fastest speed - - 70 minutes.

And I ate:

Three Weetabix in milk

Two slices of wholemeal bread and butter

plain yogurt with a banana and a nectarine in it

A walnut whip (it just fell into my mouth)

M and S cauliflower cheese

no-fat yogurt

an apple

an orange

Verdict - - not bad, shame about the walnut whip!

Saturday - preparing for holiday!

Today we went into town and bought some guide books for our forthcoming trip to France and Spain, hurrah!

And I ate:

Sugar-free muesli, extra nutty

a banana

a cheese and Branston pickle sandwich, wholemeal bread

a chunk of watermelon (had one of those yesterday too, forgot to list it)

a scone with sugar-free jam

Marks and Spencer curry with naan bread

a bowl of strawberries with evaporated milk

an orange

Verdict - - not too bad but rather high in calories I'd guess. Only four fruit/veg - - but the portions of fruit were big!

Friday 12 August 2011

Friday hurrah

I let my blood sugar get too low AGAIN at lunchtime - - wonder what I can do to stop this!!

Today I ate:

a bowl of Special K with red berries

a banana

a bagel with peanut butter

three plums

a fat-free yogurt

a scone, half with no-added-sugar jam

pork casserole - - pork, carrots, onions with boiled potatoes and peas

yogurt

glass of wine

Verdict: could be worse considering I let my blood sugar get so low at lunchtime, and I did get my five a day!

Some Good - - Some Bad - -

Today I went to York and back twice before lunch - - and as a result, in spite of taking a banana and an apple with me and eating both, I ended up in McDonald's on the way back from York - - nooooo! But I was about to keel over so I think I did the right thing - - must remember to take more food with me!

Soo - - today I ate:

a bowl of shredded wheat (always with semi-skimmed milk)

an apple, a banana

A Big Mac with medium fries (BAD Daphne!)

a Breakaway biscuit - - - - low blood sugar sighhh! When my blood sugar's low I just find myself halfway through such things. Grrr!

After that things got better:

a no-fat yogurt

three plums

lots of little tomatoes, some fresh spinach leaves and fresh peas

a toasted bagel with peanut butter

a low-fat yogurt

an orange

Verdict: Too high in fat but at least there were six or so helpings of fruit and veg.

Wednesday 10 August 2011

Rainy Wednesday

Today I ate:

a bowl of bitesize shredded wheat

Marks and Spencer cauliflower cheese

Some plain low-fat yogurt with sweetener

An orange

a bagel with some brie

Salad: tomatoes, fresh spinach, fresh peas with coleslaw

a peach and apricot low-fat yogurt

a packet of plain crisps

two plums and an apricot

Verdict: Well, there's at least five fruit and veg there - - shame about the crisps though!

Tuesday 9 August 2011

Ate a lot - - - but exercised too!

Well I ate rather more than usual today - - but I did quite a lot of gardening and went for a great walk too (thank you!). Also had a very pleasant lunch out.

Today I ate:

a bowl of Shredded Wheat

Carvery lunch: turkey, roast potatoes, cabbage, carrot, peas, broccoli, cauliflower, onion

And dessert: apple and rhubarb crumble and custard (ohhh it was delicious!)

M and S chicken korma and wholegrain rice and peas

An orange

Verdict: Too much food and I wouldn't usually have dessert - - but it was great! A lovely day.

Not Too Bad

Well it was a really stressful day yesterday so I'm still glad I didn't reach for the chocolate and I haven't today either!

Soo - - - today I ate

a bowl of Special K with red berries

and then I let my blood sugar get too low so had to just keep on eating at lunchtime - - but what I ate wasn't too bad:

Half a pot of Carrot and Coriander Soup (M and S)

two slices of wholemeal bread and butter

some plain yogurt with sweetener

two plums and an orange

Then for tea: half a medium pepperoni pizza

half a medium honeydew melon

four breadsticks

another orange (I like oranges) and some fresh peas

Verdict - - not too bad, could be better but lots of fruit anyway!

Sunday 7 August 2011

Somewhat Horrid Day but Healthy

It's been a really stressful day because Olli and Gareth and Allee and David missed the ferry back from Wacken - and knew they were going to miss it hours before because they just didn't leave early enough and were caught in the Hamburg traffic.

I know it was very stressful for them - - and also for me! Sighhhhhhhh. Sometimes I feel I can't cope with much more of this sort of thing - - and then I do - - -

Anyway, what I ate today:

a bowl of Special K with red berries

a cheese omelette with salad (leaves, tomatoes, small coleslaw)

a fruit scone with butter

Two plums

Large mixed salad with apple, peppers, cucumber, leaves, tomatoes, fresh peas, spring onions in it - - plus three bean salad (Marks and Spencer's!) plus a couple of slices of ham, plus two boiled potatoes.

Two petits filous yogurty things

a bowl of cherries (just like life is not)

an orange

Verdict - - well, for such a stressful day my food was remarkably healthy - I'm quite surprised! (Could it be that there's no chocolate in the house?)

I usually go swimming on a Sunday - didn't today as I was feeling a bit dizzy. But I did do quite a bit of fairly strenuous gardening.

Saturday 6 August 2011

Saturday in Summer

A cool, wet Saturday - - and today I ate - -

a bowl of bitesize Shredded Wheat

a banana

an Eccles cake

two slices of wholemeal bread and sugarfree jam

two plums

half a medium pizza - - cheese and tomato

a nectarine

a piece of watermelon

Verdict: I'm not very pleased with this - - no veg though plenty of fruit! Could be worse though. But I hope tomorrow won't be!

Friday 5 August 2011

Friday's Food

Today I shopped at Marks and Spencer - - and let my blood sugar get far too low before lunch! Sighh.

So - today I ate

a bowl of sugar-free muesli (Dorset Cereals - - extra nuts - - )

an apple

two slices of wholemeal bread and butter

several small tomatoes and some green leaves, different kinds

a slice of watermelon

a Petit Filou yogurty thingy

a plain scone with sugar-free jam

(yes, quite a lot of lunch because it was late!)

Tea/Dinner/Supper whatever you call it - -

another slice of watermelon

Lamb chops with boiled potatoes and frozen peas and fresh carrots and gravy

No-fat yogurt

Verdict - - well I won't get scurvy - - too much lunch really but that's because my blood sugar was low and at least I stopped myself before I ate everything in the kitchen!

Thursday 4 August 2011

Back on the Five a Day

Okay, I never stopped aiming for the five portions of fruit and veg a day - - but life got in the way and I stopped blogging about it.

But I think it's time to go back to it now to see how I'm doing. This blog's not just about fruit and veg of course - - it's about everything I eat in my ongoing battle with diabetes and fruitless bid to become a size 10. Though that's never going to happen, because my back's too broad.

Anyway, since I stopped writing this blog I've been doing a lot of swimming and am definitely much fitter - - but I want to get fitter still.

So - - today I ate - -

a bowl of sugar-free muesli with nuts and dates and raisins in it - - Dorset Cereals - - yum!

an apple

a tuna salad sandwich, white bread

a portion of honeydew melon

a mint chocolate biscuit (quite small! I'd let my blood sugar get FAR too low!)

Salad - - salami, hummus, coleslaw and mixed salad with tomato, cucumber, peppers, apple in it.

A portion of watermelon

A small Petit Filous yogurtything.

An orange

A small glass of wine.

Exercise? - - just walking across Leeds Uni campus.
